BUS Grant Eligibility Checker
Check whether your property qualifies for the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. Answer 4 quick questions to get your result.
What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a UK government grant programme that provides £7,500 towards the cost of installing an air source heat pump, ground source heat pump, or (from April 2026) an air-to-air heat pump or heat battery. It was introduced to make low-carbon heating more affordable for homeowners. The scheme is administered by Ofgem and runs until 31 December 2027.
Who qualifies for the BUS grant?
To qualify for the £7,500 BUS grant, your property must meet all of the following criteria:
- The property is in England, Scotland, or Wales (Northern Ireland has a separate scheme)
- The property currently has a fossil fuel heating system (gas, oil, LPG) or electric storage heaters
- No heat pump has been installed at the property before
- The property is not a new build without an existing heating system
- The installation is carried out by an MCS-certified installer
Rental properties and second homes can also qualify. There is no income limit for the BUS grant.
How do you apply for the BUS grant?
You do not apply for the BUS grant yourself. Your MCS-certified installer applies on your behalf. The process works as follows:
- You get quotes from MCS-certified installers. Always get at least two quotes.
- Your installer checks your property meets the eligibility criteria.
- You agree to proceed. Your installer applies to Ofgem for a voucher before installation begins.
- Ofgem approves the voucher. The installer then completes the installation.
- The £7,500 grant is deducted from your invoice. You only pay the net amount.
What is MCS certification?
MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) is the UK's quality standard for renewable energy and low-carbon heating installers. Only MCS-certified installers can apply for the BUS grant. Using an MCS-certified installer also means you get a warranty and your system is eligible for the Smart Export Guarantee (for solar installations). You can check if an installer is MCS-certified at mcscertified.com.
What's new from April 2026?
From April 2026, the BUS grant was expanded to include:
- Air-to-air heat pumps — previously excluded, now eligible for £7,500
- Heat batteries — thermal storage devices that work with electricity and renewables, now eligible for £7,500
The BUS grant amount remains at £7,500 for all qualifying technologies. The scheme deadline is 31 December 2027.
